DSLR cameras have sensors, which record light that enters through a camera lens and falls onto it during an exposure, via photosites (silicon chips). The sensor then converts the light into data that sets the brightness and size of the image, when it is viewed on a screen after being taken.

Basically the sensor converts an optical image that we can see to an electric signal.
