The theme this fortnight has been Portraits in Dramatic Light, which has seen the Photoh groups exploring ways of using shadow and light to create interesting portraits.
Clockwise from top left: Liz Barker, Patrick Cummings, Glenn Cockerton, Kathy Wallace, Nicola Robson, Gavin Rudge
Although it can be tempting to steer clear of dark, shadowy areas, or shards of harsh light when photographing, these challenges can actually be used to your advantage to produce creative images.
All the photos that were entered in the competition can be viewed in the album on the Photoh Facebook page.
The finalists for this fortnight are:
Gavin Rudge, Adelaide
The use of a strong sidelight and shadows creates a great, eerie atmosphere in Gavin's photo. We love how he has used a tight crop and a wide aperture so that you are focusing on all the detail and texture.
Glenn Cockerton, Melbourne
This is a great example of how you can use a combination of shadow and light to produce beautiful highlights across someone's face and hair.
Liz Barker, Perth
Liz has used all the available light perfectly, to capture this very well exposed photo. The shadows falling across the model's side are complimented by the areas of highlights across his eye, which is where you are immediately drawn to.
Kathy Wallace, Sydney
Kathy has made great use of the tricky coloured light behind the model, using it to illuminate her with amazing tints of soft tones. It's great to see a strong burst of colour!
Nicola Robson, Sydney
Wow! Nicola has brilliantly captured the model's face and hair with the dramatic side light. It's great that she has chosen to leave the rest of the photo in darkness, as it gives the image a mysterious narrative.
Patrick Cummings, Sydney
Patrick has used the light to capture an intriguing moment in this photo. The way the light picks up all the cigarette smoke is amazing, almost theatrical. Great choice to have the photo in black&white too, it is full of rich contrasts between the light and dark.
The winner this fortnight is...Liz Barker from Perth!
Congratulations Liz, you have won a $100 JB Hi-Fi voucher!
And in second place we have Patrick Cummings from Sydney.
Congratulations Patrick, a $50 JB Hi-Fi voucher is yours!
