Reflections are an interesting way of adding another visual layer to your composition, and are great way of producing some playful shots.
Reflections can be found all around you, and you won't stop noticing them once you have your eyes peeled! Shop windows, mirrors, water, sunglasses....keep an eye out and think about how you could incorporate them into a photo.
We were looking for photographers that found a reflection and captured it in a playful way that encourages the viewer to look twice or be thought-provoking. There were so many entries this fortnight, and it was an incredibly tough job narrowing them down to these five finalists.
We were looking for photos that showed good use of camera settings to correctly expose a photo in a challenging light environment, as well as use of creativity with the light available.
Judging is now only done for first and second place winners only. Any feedback on images can be sought in our Facebook groups during Critique Me Tuesday, both before and after the competitions, just be sure to tag the instructor in each group, who is identified each Tuesday night.
To see all of the photography competition entries, head to the album on the Photoh Facebook page here.
The finalists this fortnight are:
Karen Smith, Adelaide
O'Regan Heares Brisbane
Ben Roehlen, Melbourne
Nigel Holme, Perth
Kathy Wallace, Sydney
The winner this fortnight is...Kathy Wallace from Sydney! Congratulations Kathy, you have won a $100 JB Hifi voucher!
Kathy's image is mind-bending and cleverly mixes the 'real' with the reflection in a way that demands a longer look. We love how it appears to be two images in one! Great use of perspective to further enhance the playfulness of the reflections too.
And in second place we have...O'Regan Heares in Brisbane, who has won a $50 JB Hifi voucher.
This is a great take on the brief 'Playing with Reflection' as there are lots of different layers going on, with the actual view being interlaced with the reflected view. The outcome is a well composed and very interesting shot.
Congratulations to all our finalists, and thanks to everyone who entered!
The challenge for next fortnight is Nature Photography.
Nature can be found on your doorstep, whether it's an oasis in the middle of the city, or the sprawling outback. The genre of nature photography also encompasses a lot of different subjects and styles: from little crawling critters to different flora and fauna.
Think about what sort of photo you have in mind, and what settings/lens/equipment you need to really emphasise your subject. We'll be looking for entries that demonstrate good technical ability and an eye for an interesting subject.
Entries opened on Friday the 18th May and will close on Thursday the 31st May at 23:59 AEST.
