Photography Challenge 82: Photographing in Harsh Light Montage

Our theme this fortnight at the Photoh groups was 'Photographing in Harsh Light'.

We have plenty of harsh light here in Australia, and although the strong midday sun can be seen as a nuisance when you're trying to expose a photo, it can also be put to good creative use.

Capturing interesting shadows and silhouettes are a great way of using the light and exploring the contrasts between light and darkness. You could also use a beam or source of light in a way to emphasise your subject - much like a spotlight!

You can see all of the competition entries here on the Photoh Facebook page .

We were looking for photos that showed good use of camera settings to correctly expose a photo in a challenging light environment, as well as use of creativity with the light available.

Judging is now only done for first and second place winners only. Any feedback on images can be sought in our Facebook groups during Critique Me Tuesday, both before and after the competitions, just be sure to tag the instructor in each group, who is identified each Tuesday night.

To see all of the photography competition entries, head to the album on the Photoh Facebook page here.

Alan Coligado, Sydney

The winner this fortnight is...Alan Coligado from Sydney! Congratulations Alan, you have won a $100 JB Hifi voucher!
We really like Alan's use of shadow and darkness contrasting with the strong beam of light in this photo. Alan has been careful to retain the detail of the people and their clothing in this image, which can be tricky when the light source is so strong and you're balancing out your camera settings.

And in second place we have...Laura O'Grady in Melbourne, who has won a $50 JB Hifi voucher.
Laura's photo really plays with the extremes of light and dark, with the light bouncing off of the moving water (very tricky to capture right!) as well as the shadow of the silhouette figures in the foreground. A really interesting capture!

The challenge for next fortnight is Playing with Reflections. This is a great theme to really get your creative juices going! Think of all the ways you could incorporate reflections - either psychically or figuratively - in your photos. We've compiled a few ideas in the blog post for you here.

Entries opened on Friday the 4th May and will close on Thursday the 17th May at 23:59 AEST.

To enter, simply post your photo on the Photoh Facebook wall stating your city. First prize is a $100 JB Hifi voucher and second prize is a $50 JB Hifi voucher.

Please read our post on the competition rules and guidelines if you'd like more information before submitting a photo. If you have any other questions you can message us or email victoria@photoh.com.au.
