Framing

Dictionary (71)
Framing: Framing is crucial to composition. Framing is how the borders of the photograph are positioned around a focal point, so that anything distracting or redundant is eliminated from the frame.

Framing can also be defined as the way objects in a photograph act as a frame, such as tree branches, windows, doorways, arches, etc.

Also see Rule of Thirds.
